The World is Flat

Welcome reader, this is the first post of my new wordpress blog. I recently graduated from Temple University with a BA in Accounting and International Business. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with my life but I’m going to try to keep this blog or perhaps my own domain name to track my travels, my professional developement, and all the amazing things that I run into while researching my interests or just browsing the web.

I can’t help but open this up with one of my favorite speakers and writters. My interest vary but technology and the changes that it creates in humanity, business, and culture make up very large part of those interests. Hopefully my musings will capture your imagination and prompt some interesting debates.

Around 4 years ago I was lucky enough to see this man speak in one of my classes. Truthfully I didn’t really comprehend how amazing this fact would become. 4 years  ago this man was famous but nowhere near the superstar he is now.  A little research will show that if you want to see Thomas Friedman speak now you are going to pay a pretty penny for it.  I can’t really explain all the doors that reading his book and hearing his words opened for me. I once got the opportunity to interview with the CEO of a company that produced and imported medical equipment from China. During the interview we touched several topics but I think what really made me stand out was the fact that I could discuss the issues Mr. Friedman addressed.

When the world is flat, whatever can be done will be done.

-Thomas Friedman

Cheers to a flat world and the unlimited potential it represents for a semi professional seeking enlightenment.

>While researching a few things this morning, I stumbled onto some cool Wikipedia articles.

This one on the definition and history of the term World Citizen.

Apparently the term can be traced back all the way to Socrates (I always liked his style).

The page on “Global Citizenship” offers even more interesting facts and breaks down a lot of the more complex issues and view points: Global Citizenship

Another interesting find was the fact that there exists a “World Passport.”The document itself is not acknowledged by very many countries but it seems like a genuine attempt at sparking a discussion on the issue. It is issued by the World Service Authority which was founded in 1953 by an actor and former WWII bomber pilot named Garry Davis who denounced American citizenship to live as a “citizen of the world.” You can read more about the document here: World Passport

I’ve often joked that I’m a citizen of the world, and now I’m thinking that maybe I should put my money where my mouth is. I would enjoy being able to pull out a document stamped with “world passport” if only as a symbol of what I hope to one day have.

Wikipedia is always nice for an overview.

>This is just cool: http://venturebeat.com/2011/05/05/computer-on-a-stick/

The concept itself is not that amazing, the quest to make everything smaller and faster has been well documented. What is amazing is the price, you combine this with some ancient screens and keyboards and you’ve got a way to connect people that would not have the ability to access all the information available on the internet. Information like the Blue Prints for civilization that I posted a while back. A little information could provide a huge jump in the living standards for a great number of people.

>Traveling the world: post 1 of ???

>Last night I finally managed to have a real discussion with a friend of mine that is also interested in traveling the world. This was a huge relief for me. Having a single individual you can trust and who knows you, can add a little relief to the process of introducing yourself to a group of people in the morning and saying goodbye again that very night. This dear readers ( if the 204 hits I’ve gotten have actually been readers)is one part of traveling that is the same everywhere you travel.

Having said that I think its time for this blog to start becoming what it was always meant to be. A way for me to record all my travels and keep in touch with the people that I met along the way.

For now I’m going to publish some of the planning and the locations I want to go to so that I have a record I can always look back on.

There is not much to report but my friend and I have agreed on one thing. We are not going to China!I feel that if we can agree on that, then we are on the right path.
